Thursday's forecast: One more tranquil day before a storm system to close the work week
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Thursday, January 11th, 2024.
We have one more tranquil day of weather on Thursday before another round of showers and potentially strong thunderstorms arrives for Friday.
Temperatures on Thursday will start in the mid-30s, and a light breeze will make it feel closer to freezing.
From there, we’ll warm up to around 60 degrees or so under partly cloudy skies, and overall, Thursday’s looking pretty good.
Friday, not so much.
Another storm system will be developing across the Mid-South later on Thursday, and it’ll drag another front through the area later on Friday.
Ahead of that front, we can expect showers to develop, and if we can get somewhat unstable, another round of severe thunderstorms may be possible Friday afternoon into the evening.
We’ll start the day dealing with some minor coastal flooding.
Water levels should peak around 7 feet with a 826 a.m.
high tide.
Rain could be in the area, but so far it doesn’t look like it’ll be terribly heavy if it is.
Recent models have been trending away from having rain in the morning, so the flooding risk looks relatively minor at this point.
Showers will build across the area as a warm front lifts northward throughout the day, and it’ll also turn breezy once more.
Expect winds around 20 mph to gust 30 to 40 mph at times, making bridge travel difficult once again.
However, it does not look like we get winds quite like we saw on Tuesday, as the windfields are just not as extreme.
But we still have plenty of shear to play with though, and as those showers lift out and the warm sector takes hold, there is a window before the front gets through later Friday for a few strong to severe thunderstorms.
Damaging wind gusts would be the main concern, but once again, shear profiles are such that a tornado can’t be totally taken off the table.
Again though, this will be largely conditional on just how much we destabilize, and that might not be knowable until the day of.
So, I’d respect the uncertainty here and have that severe weather plan ready to go again on Friday just in case.
After the front gets through late Friday or very early Saturday morning, we’ll see improving conditions for the weekend.
Temperatures on Saturday will start in the low 40s, but with cooler and drier air rushing in, and some breezy conditions at times, we’ll keep highs suppressed to the mid 50s despite partly cloudy skies.
Winds will slacken for Sunday, and we warm up a little bit too with highs in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees with partly cloudy to mostly sunny conditions expected.
Our next rain chance arrives sometime on Martin Luther King Jr.
Day with another cold front, and that front will send us a little deeper into the cold air, with highs in the 40s possible on Tuesday and lows in the 20s next Wednesday morning as below normal temperatures overtake much of the continental United States.
