Wednesday and the rest of the work week: A respite, then another storm for Friday
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Wednesday, January 10th, 2024 and the rest of the work week.
But first, a note on Tuesday’s weather event, which was a wet, windy and gnarly mess, pretty much as advertised.
There were numerous reports of downed trees and power lines, which knocked out power for thousands at one point.
And wind gusts were impressive, with Charleston International Airport topping out at 69 miles an hour.
Coastal stations, such as the Charleston Harbor Tide Gauge, as well as the weather flow station at Folly Beach, reached 67 miles an hour.
And the Ravenel Bridge, where a tractor trailer was knocked over due to the strong winds, got up to 64 miles per hour.
Gusts well above 50 miles per hour were common in other coastal locations, with gusts in the 40 to 50 mile an hour range verifying further inland.
All in all, the storm did generally what it was expected to do.
Fortunately, the morning tidal flooding in downtown Charleston was relatively minor, and there were no tornadoes in the Tri-County area, so we’ll take those winds when we can get them.
Even still though, we won’t know the full extent of the straight-line wind damage until the sun comes up on Wednesday.
The good news is that we’ll have plenty of sunshine on Wednesday, though the winds will remain breezy, particularly in the morning, as cool air blows into the area behind a cold front.
We start the day in the low 40s, but the ongoing cool advection will keep highs pinned to the mid-50s at best.
Gusts upward of 30 to 35 miles an hour will be possible Wednesday morning, but those winds will start to slacken as we get later in the day.
Thursday starts out even more on the chilly side as lows dip to the mid-30s, but we’ll warm to the low 60s in the afternoon under partly cloudy skies.
And winds will be calmer than Wednesday’s, too.
Should be a nice day.
The respite from stormy weather doesn’t last too long, though, as another storm system affects the area on Friday.
Friday looks to be another breezy day, but far from what we experienced on Tuesday.
However, there will once again be a risk for some severe storms as favorable shear profiles will once again develop.
And once again, the governing factor in any severe threat will be the available instability.
I’ll have more on this risk tomorrow as more data begins to flow in, but right now it does not look nearly as capable of as widespread of an impact as we saw on Tuesday, but it’s still worth watching.
Stay tuned.
