Weekend forecast: Wet start, but drying out on Sunday
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Saturday, January 6th, 2024, the rest of the weekend, and looking into early next week as well as we watch for a potentially strong storm system to impact the area on Tuesday.
First, we’ll be waking up to rain on Saturday as it moves in from the west overnight.
We start the day in the mid 40s, but we could touch 70 degrees for the first time in 2024 as we’ll be in the warm sector of the system for much of the day.
As with some embedded heavy downpours, we’ll be moving through the area through early afternoon, and from there rain should scatter out some, and we should be rain free by evening.
Winds will also be a factor, so watch for gusts 30-35 mph at times, especially around midday.
Sunday will be quieter and cooler in the wake of the storm system.
We’ll start the day in the mid 40s once more, but breezy westerly winds will be bringing cooler and somewhat drier air into the area, keeping highs suppressed to around 60 degrees in the afternoon under a mix of sun and clouds.
We’ll keep that going into Monday, but by Monday night we may start to get rain back in the picture ahead of what’s expected to be an impressive storm system that’s going to roll out of the mid-south into the Great Lakes region on Tuesday.
The deepening low pressure system will butt up against Canadian high pressure to its northeast and that’s going to tighten the pressure gradient across the area, and that’ll make for a rather windy day.
Early indications are that gusts in excess of 40 mph are going to be possible.
Heavy rain should accompany the cold front with plentiful moisture looking likely, and there will be the risk for some severe thunderstorms as shear looks rather impressive, though the amount of instability remains to be seen.
If strong onshore flow develops as expected, we could be looking at coastal flooding issues around Tuesday’s high tide as well.
Stay tuned for updates and refinements to the forecast as we get closer, but for now I’ll be thinking about the potential for disruptive travel on Tuesday.
