Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024, along with a look at the rest of the first work week of the year.

While I hope everyone had a happy and safe start to 2024, and it was a mostly quiet and seasonably mild day of weather on New Year’s Day, there were a few showers accompanied a cold front earlier Monday evening.

Those showers are over and will be long gone by the time many of you listen to this, and will start Tuesday near the freezing mark as cooler air moves in behind a cold front.

Highs will be clear and should remain that way for much of the day as highs top out only in the mid 50s, roughly 5 degrees or so below normal for January 2nd.

Wednesday will start with lows around freezing, though will warm to the upper 50s in the afternoon.

It will feature increasing cloud cover ahead of showers, which will enter the area generally after sunset.

Shower activity will be around Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, but should clear the area by daybreak on Thursday.

Thursday will start around 40 degrees, the warmest start this week, but will warm once again just to the mid 50s with some cooler and drier air working back into the area.

And Friday will start again around freezing before warming back to the mid 50s once more under generally sunny skies.

Our next rain chance then arrives as the developing storm system on Saturday, expect increasingly unsettled weather during the day, with rain departing on early Sunday, leaving behind breezy conditions and highs near normal.

Finally, a couple climate notes as we bid adieu to 2023.

It was the second warmest year on record at the North Charleston climate site at Charleston International Airport, with an average temperature of 68.7 degrees.

And this puts 2023 second only to 1990, when the average temperature was 69.2.

Meanwhile, downtown clocked its 7th warmest year on record, with an average temperature of 68.6.

Records at North Charleston go back to 1938, and they go all the way back to 1870 at downtown.

And here’s a stat that might surprise you.

2023 was the first year in the past four that we did not record any snow at North Charleston.

A trace of snowfall was recorded on Christmas Day 2020 in the wake of a passing front, March 6th, 2021, and January 29th, 2022.

A trace of sleet was also recorded on January 22nd, 2022, and that goes down in the record books of snowfall as well, though it wasn’t actual snow.
