New Year's weekend: Quiet and cool
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Saturday, December 30th, 2023, and the rest of the New Year’s weekend.
Another chilly, breezy, and mostly sunny day is on tap for Saturday as an upper trough swings through, and high pressure continues to build in at the surface.
Temperatures will start in the mid-30s, but the winds will make it feel a little bit more like the upper 20s.
And then we’ll see those winds begin to increase again as daytime heating mixes up the lower troposphere, with gusts 20-25 mph a possibility for one more day.
Highs will top out just in the low to mid-50s, so you’ll want something warm to wear throughout the day, especially with that wind.
Heading into Saturday night, we start to see the wind diminish as daytime heating is lost.
The pressure radiant will also relax some more as high pressure centered roughly in the eastern gulf builds a little bit more across the area.
The aforementioned high pressure, lower wind speeds, and clear skies will also set up decent radiational cooling conditions.
And as a result, we’ll start Sunday around the freezing mark.
However, as the trough swings out, the core of the coldest air will move away, and this will allow temperatures to head back towards the upper 50s on Sunday afternoon, once again under mostly sunny skies.
Now if you have plans to be out and about on Sunday night touring in 2024, make sure you’re dressed somewhat warmly as temperatures will be dropping to the lower 40s by midnight.
Otherwise, there’s no concerns.
Weather-wise, anyway.
The brief warming trend continues into New Year’s Day, which will feature a little bit more in the way of cloud cover, but also highs in the low 60s.
This is ahead of a cold front that will get through overnight Monday and early Tuesday, and that could bring a shower or two with it, but moisture is generally limited.
The next solid rain chance arrives on Thursday.
And overall, the first week of 2024 looks to be generally at or cooler than normal.
And finally, a programming note.
With mostly benign conditions expected through New Year’s, I’ll be taking the next couple days off from the podcast.
As always, though, conditions and forecast updates will be available on chswx.com, as well as social media.
And if something comes up that warrants an emergency pod, I’ll be right back here in the saddle.
For now, though, that was Charleston Weather Daily for December 30th, 2023.
