The week ahead: Warm and muggy to start, but turning really nice for the weekend
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Monday, September 11th, 2023, as well as the week ahead.
We get the week off to a warm and occasionally stormy start, but changes are in the offing around midweek that I think you’ll appreciate.
First though, we have a few more days of warm and muggy conditions, with lows in the low 70s and highs in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees each afternoon through Wednesday.
Expect a scattering of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoons along and ahead of the sea breeze, with some brief heavy rain and maybe some gusty winds from the strongest storms, but no major problems are expected beyond that.
A cold front approaches the area later Wednesday, and will bring the risk for showers and thunderstorms a little higher that evening.
A strong storm or two can’t be ruled out with decent instability and a little shear to work with, but again, it doesn’t look like we will see much in the way of any severe weather as of right now.
After that front is when things get good.
We’ll start to notice it on Thursday as cooler and drier high pressure begins to build into the area from the northwest.
Highs are only going to top out in the mid 80s in the afternoon.
And the drier air really starts to take hold for Friday into the weekend though, as dew points plummet into the 50s for a few days.
We’ll start each day in the low 60s, and highs will top out in the low to mid 80s each afternoon under mostly sunny skies.
A stray shower or storm might be possible late Sunday, but right now that looks highly unlikely and should not mar what is otherwise a really fantastic looking Friday in the weekend.
And while it’s not quite an Ugg Boots advisory level cool down, it’s another hint that the season is beginning to turn a little.
In the tropics, Lee is getting its act back together a little bit as shear relaxes, but the forecast solidly remains that a turn to the north will take place mid-week, sparing the southeast US of any direct effects from the storm.
However, we will see an uptick in rough surf and rip currents thanks to swell from Lee this week.
Margot is also out there in the central Atlantic, moving northward well away from any land.
And there are two other areas that the Hurricane Center is watching too.
The first is a little disturbed weather to the west of the Cape Verde Islands that have a small chance to develop this week.
Second is a wave off of Africa that has a medium chance of development as it gets into the central Atlantic later this week.
Models do want to gradually develop this storm, but we’ll wait and see how this transpires.
None of these areas pose any imminent risk to the low country, an awfully nice place to be at the peak of hurricane season.
Stay prepared though, we have a lot of season left, and as we know, these things can turn on a dime.
But for now, enjoy some peace.
And that was Charleston Weather Daily for September 11th, 2023.
