Hello everyone! Jared Smith here with the Charleston weather forecast for Wednesday, September 6th, 2023.

Wednesday is going to be an even warmer day with a little more humidity mixed in for good measure.

Expect to start the day in the low 70s before temperatures climb back into the mid 90s for the afternoon under mostly sunny skies.

That little bit of humidity will send the heat index to about 100 degrees, certainly on the warmer side of things post-September 1st.

We’ll do this again on Thursday too, with temperatures starting a little warmer, generally in the mid 70s, before warming back to the mid 90s in the afternoon with a heat index around 100 degrees once again.

The next chance for afternoon thunderstorms arrives on Friday as ridging weakens and the sea breeze pushes inland, igniting a few storms as it goes.

Temperatures will run a touch cooler on Friday, expect generally low 90s, but two points back in the low 70s will help make up for it.

Shower and thunderstorm chances head up a little bit more for the weekend with temperatures running a little closer to normal, but still a little on the steamy side.

Meanwhile in the tropics, a tropical storm Lee has formed and is on course to becoming a very strong hurricane as it moves west-northwest across the central Atlantic this week.

The National Hurricane Center explicitly forecasts it to be a strong Category 4 storm by this weekend, noting in its discussion that it might actually be underdoing this forecast somewhat.

Perish the thought.

Right now, Lee is a concern for folks on the Leeward Islands and in Puerto Rico as it will come uncomfortably close to those locations this weekend.

From there, it’s still too early to say exactly what Lee will do.

There is excellent agreement thus far in the global model ensembles to take Lee more northwest and then north next week, generally on a largely out-to-sea course, though Bermuda is going to want to keep an eye on it.

However, this is very much at the range where things can change, sometimes significantly, so Lee bears watching.

The good news is that we have plenty of time to watch it, and there are no imminent tropical threats to the US, much less the Lowcountry.

Just peek at forecast updates every once in a while, or just listen to this podcast, where I’ll give you a quick update on Lee every night or morning, depending on when you listen.
