The week ahead: Hot start, but storms cool us off
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Monday, August 14th, 2023, as well as a look at the week ahead.
After a very hot Sunday that featured heat indices well above 110 degrees at times and spots, we just might get a repeat performance on Monday, unfortunately.
Lows may not get below 80 degrees to start the day, and we should have no trouble getting back into the mid 90s in the afternoon.
Combine this with upper 70s dew points, and you get heat indices once again well into the danger zone and above the 110 degree heat advisory threshold.
And depending on just how the dew points work out, it is possible we may see another excessive heat warning for heat indices exceeding 115, so stay tuned for updates on that one.
Regardless, it’s going to be hot.
Like Sunday, a few showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the afternoon, which may bring some relief to some, but I wouldn’t hang your hat on it though, as decent capping and dry air aloft will help keep coverage isolated to scattered at best.
Though Tuesday may get off to a hot start once again, and we could see another round of heat advisories before it’s all said and done, however, as disturbances aloft weaken the upper ridge that’s had a hold on us, and the front at the surface approaches the area, shower and thunderstorm chances should increase markedly as we get into the afternoon and evening hours.
Coverage will be more widespread than previous days, and a few locations could even see some minor flooding given the deeper moisture getting into place.
Also, a few strong storms can’t be totally discounted either, with gusty winds as the main concern.
So stay tuned to that possibility as well.
But that being said, that should put an end to this heat wave.
The aforementioned front should stall out nearby Wednesday, and could usher in a slightly cooler and ever so slightly drier air mass.
Still, showers and thunderstorms should fire near the front and along and ahead of the sea breeze Wednesday afternoon, and they could be scattered to even numerous.
Highs top out in the low 90s though, so at least it won’t be completely scorching, but low 90s are about all we’re going to be able to do as far as cooling off at this point in the year.
We’ll see similar conditions on Thursday, before we start to see the pattern turn back more towards the standard summer configuration for Friday and the weekend.
Temperatures climb back up into the low to mid 90s, and lows will generally run in the mid to upper 70s.
It’s too soon to tell just how the dew points will work out though, as far as heat advisories go, but stay tuned.
It’s entirely possible we may get back into advisory territory once again.
Finally a peek at the tropics! The National Hurricane Center has outlined a couple areas to watch later this week as a couple waves are forecast to move off of Africa and potentially develop into tropical cyclones well in the eastern Atlantic.
These areas are far away and, if early model prognostications are any indication, should stay far away.
However, it’s a good reminder that we’re into mid-August now, on the upslope to the climatological peak of hurricane season on September 10th.
So the best time to get ready is now, before a storm gets interested in heading our direction and people flood the grocery stores.
