Weekend forecast: "Cooler" with a little better shot at afternoon showers and thunderstorms
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Saturday, July 22nd, 2023.
It won’t be quite as hot this weekend as it was this past week as a trough begins to dig into our north.
This is shoving the heat dome to the southwest and will help keep temperatures only, and yes the scare quotes are back, in the low 90s each afternoon.
Humidity is hanging around though, and that’ll drive heat indices slightly north of 100 on Saturday and around 100 on Sunday, but certainly not to the even more dangerous levels of the past week.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be a little more likely each afternoon this weekend given the trough aloft and disturbances rounding the base of it.
We’ll get off to a rain freeze start on Saturday before showers and storms develop.
Not everyone will see storms, but those that do could see some brief periods of heavy rain, frequent lightning, and maybe even a strong wind gust or two that could be capable of some tree damage.
Sunday could start out unsettled in spots based on this evening’s guidance, a little impulse rounding the base of the trough overnight into the morning, but the more likely outcome is another round of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms as another impulse moves by later in the day.
Like Saturday, showers and storms could produce heavy downpours and even some gusty winds, but unlike Saturday, it looks like there could be more widespread coverage of storms to where most of us should see some rain at some point.
That being said, it’s not going to be a washout either, so just be ready to bring outdoor plans indoors if thunderstorms approach.
And finally, a quick look at the tropics.
Tropical Storm Dawn remains spinning around in the North Atlantic, with one more recurve to the Northeast planned before it loses tropical characteristics.
Dawn is no threat to land.
From there, attention turns to a disturbance heading towards the Lesser Antilles.
It has a pretty good shot of becoming a depression sometime within the next week, and is expected to at least survive into the Caribbean.
Given the latitude, we’ll keep an eye on this, but right now there’s no imminent concerns for the Low Country.
And that was Charleston Weather Daily for July 22nd, 2023.
