Monday's forecast: Afternoon and evening storms after another hot day, then warming up and quieting down this week
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with the Charleston weather forecast for Monday, July 17th, 2023, as well as a peek into what looks to be a hot week ahead.
Monday will start out in continued warm and muggy fashion, with lows in the upper 70s and perhaps around 80 closer to the water.
From there, highs rise into the low 90s and combine with low 70s dewpoints to yield heat indices around 103-104 or so.
Showers and thunderstorms should fire along the sea breeze as we get into the afternoon, though that sea breeze is going to have a harder time moving inland as ridging begins to build in aloft.
This could produce some unsettled weather right here in the metro around commute time, with torrential downpours and frequent lightning the main concerns.
So get ready to take a little extra time trying to get home on Monday evening.
As the subtropical ridge builds in overhead, we’ll see a downtick in afternoon and evening thunderstorm chances for midweek, and an uptick in air temperatures.
Highs in the mid to upper 90s will be common from Tuesday through Saturday, with the warmest temperatures looking likely between Wednesday and Friday.
We could peak out at 98 degrees on Thursday, or 1 degree Lache.
Drier air, and yes I’m using scare quotes, will keep dewpoints in the upper 60s to around 70, and this will act as a governor on the worst heat indices for much of us, though as the sea breeze tries to make inroads in the evenings, we could see brief peaks above 105 degrees, especially in the immediate Charleston metro area.
The ridge starts to break down on Friday, allowing for a little more in the way of scattered afternoon thunderstorms.
And by the weekend, more nominal shower and thunderstorm chances take hold, as highs gradually trend down toward the low 90s by Sunday, though mix in the humidity and it’s really not going to matter all that much.
And that was Charleston Weather Daily for July 17th, 2023.
I’m Jared Smith.
