The week ahead: Rainy Monday, a "cool" spell, then warming back to the mid-90s for the weekend
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Monday, July 10th, 2023, as well as a peek at the week ahead.
Monday is looking like a fairly active weather day across the area as an approaching front combines with a favorable upper air configuration to allow for fairly widespread showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening hours, though that’s not to rule out some rainfall before midday either.
We’re going to have plenty of moisture to wring out, and there is the potential for thunderstorms to repeat over some of the same spots to cause some flooding, and there is also the issue of the potential for heavy rain downtown coinciding with the 3.07pm high tide, which may cause yet another bout of urban flooding, I think the third in the last week.
Gotta say, it’s been a rough week for some of our friends on the Charleston Peninsula.
Also of note, the daily rainfall record at the airport for July 10th is 3.45 inches set in 1954.
And at downtown Charleston, the daily rainfall record is 2.81 inches set in 1893, and I’m sure you all remember that very well, you know, to me it seems like it was yesterday.
Those records might be a little out of reach, especially at the airport, but the right storm in the right place could make all the difference, so stay tuned.
The upshot is that temperatures are going to have a hard time getting into the mid-80s for the first time since late June with all the cloud cover and rainfall around.
The record coolest high temperature of 77 degrees, set in conjunction with the record rainfall on July 10th, 1954, should be safe, though.
So the bottom line for Monday is be ready for traffic snarls and have to route around flooded roads, especially if downtown is in your plans, and keep an ear out for flood advisories from the National Weather Service.
Something tells me that I think we’re going to have a few of those on Monday.
This mess is out of here by Tuesday morning, and that will yield a quieter day, though an afternoon storm or two is still possible.
Temperatures will still run a touch cooler than what we’ve experienced recently, with highs topping out in the low 90s, and for reference that’s about normal for this point in July.
There should still be enough humidity to make up for it, though, to get heat indices closer to 100.
This continues into Wednesday, which may actually be a rain-free day, slightly warmer but still rain-free, before afternoon shower and storm chances start to tick back up for Thursday and beyond.
We may be in for a stretch of heat advisory level warmth starting Friday, with the potential for heat indices to approach 110 degrees each afternoon into the weekend before thunderstorms cool things off for at least some of us.
As always, good practice to stay up to date with the forecast as things get massaged and worked out as we head into the weekend.
And that was Charleston Weather Daily for July 10th, 2023.
