Friday & the weekend: After a break, unsettled weather resumes
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Friday, July 7th, 2023, and the upcoming weekend.
Well, it turned out to be a pretty quiet Thursday, at least weather-wise, across the Lowcountry, and this was due to a shortwave ridge of high pressure moving on by during peak heating, as well as some northwesterly winds aloft that helped to dry out the atmosphere a little bit and keep a lid on thunderstorm development.
Now, we should return to a more unsettled regime beginning Friday as the atmosphere juices back up a little bit more.
Highs Friday top out in the mid-90s, and when you factor in dewpoints in the mid-70s, you’ve got heat indices above 105 degrees once again.
Showers and thunderstorms should fire along and ahead of the sea breeze by mid-afternoon into the evening hours, and we could see some heavy rain and frequent lightning for many storms that fire.
The risk for severe weather is low, but a couple storms could be on the strong side with gusty winds.
So, be ready to head indoors in case thunderstorms threaten your location.
And we’re going to keep this going into the weekend, with highs in the low to mid-90s expected each day.
Factor in continued mid-70s surface dewpoints, and we’re going to keep heat indices above 105 degrees each afternoon, perhaps peaking near 110 degrees on Sunday.
And if that happens, a heat advisory is going to be needed.
Scattered thunderstorms should fire on the sea breeze each afternoon, and while not everyone will see rain every day, those that do could get a pretty solid drenching with a warm and humid atmosphere in place.
Storm motions will be on the slow side given weak steering, so a bout of localized flooding or two could be possible, especially if storms set up in the right spots.
Or the wrong spots, depending on how you look at it.
And finally, minor coastal flooding will be possible overnight Friday into very early Saturday morning, as water levels could peak near 7 feet mean low or low water in the harbor, with high tide around 1238 AM.
A few spots downtown could take on some water, but major impacts are not expected.
From there, we should stay below flood stage as astronomical effects from Monday’s full moon continue to fade.
And that was Charleston Weather Daily for July 7, 2023.
