Wednesday and the rest of the work week: Hot, humid, and unsettled
Hello, everyone.
Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Wednesday, July 5th, 2023, and also taking a peek at the week ahead, which is going to be hot, humid, and unsettled.
After tying a record high at 98 degrees, or one Lachet, on July 4th, we are headed back to the mid-90s on Wednesday, but it does look like that showers and thunderstorms are going to fire a little bit earlier, so we shouldn’t get quite as hot, but that doesn’t matter because the heat index is still going to be 106, 107 before thunderstorms fire, and those thunderstorms will be capable of producing some heavy rain.
In fact, on Tuesday, we had some areas get close to three inches in an hour.
Pretty impressive rainfall totals, and that’s not at all surprising given the amount of precipitable water in the air, about 2.25 inches, which is right in the 90th percentile for this point in the year.
We also expect thunderstorms to produce some excessive lightning at times, and there will be the risk for a couple storms to become strong to even severe with damaging downburst winds.
So again, I’m not expecting a lot of severe weather, but lightning makes every thunderstorm dangerous.
And we’re going to do this again on Thursday, and we’re going to do this again on Friday, though air temperatures are going to be dropping down a little bit as the ridge shifts a little further south, but we’re going to be right in the line of fire for disturbances and maybe even a front trying to get nearby to add another trigger to the mesoscale mess that is Charleston in mid-July.
And finally, we still need to watch out for coastal flooding with the evening high tides.
High tide at 1048 p.m.
on Wednesday looks capable of topping out around 7.1 to 7.3 feet.
So just make sure that you’re watching out for saltwater on the roads and that you’re taking alternate routes so you don’t rust up your undercarriage.
We don’t want that.
