Wednesday's forecast: Summer sun -- and summer heat
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Wednesday, June 28th, 2023.
A stretch of warm weather continues Wednesday and through the rest of the week as high pressure builds in across the area both at the surface and aloft.
Downslope flow laid in some compressional heating and helped to mix out dewpoints enough to where the humidity won’t be overwhelming.
But even still, highs in the mid 90s Wednesday afternoon with heat indices around 96 degrees will be plenty sweaty.
And we’ll get progressively more humid as we head into the weekend too.
Expect similar air temperatures to Wednesday on Thursday, but with a slightly warmer dewpoint yielding heat indices near 98 degrees.
Or if you prefer to measure your temperatures in units of late 90s boy bands, the heat index will be 1 degree Lachet.
By Friday, Atlantic high pressure begins to take over and the wind direction is going to go more southerly, turning on the moisture pump.
This will contribute to an increase in cloud cover in the afternoon, though we should stay storm free for one more day.
And while the cloud cover will help hold highs to the low 90s, the low to mid 70s dewpoints will drive Friday’s heat indices to around 100 degrees in the afternoon.
From here we turn even warmer heading into the weekend with air temperatures in the mid 90s and dewpoints in the mid 70s on Sunday combining for heat indices near 110 degrees, which is heat advisory criteria for July and beyond.
So if you’re going to be out and about, make sure you’ve got plenty of water, make sure you’re taking frequent breaks in the shade, and if you can stay inside and air conditioning during the heat of the afternoon, that’s not a bad idea either.
Save some of that out and about time for later in the evening or first thing in the morning.
I know a lot of us are pretty well built for this, but you still don’t want to play with 110 degree heat indices.
Just not a good idea.
Quick peek at the tropics shows reasonably unremarkable weather, save for the slight chance that Cindy’s Remnants may regenerate into a tropical storm as it heads towards Nova Scotia this week.
The National Hurricane Center gives it just 20% odds over the next week to regenerate though, and regardless of what it does, it’ll have no impact on our weather here at home.
And that was Charleston Weather Daily for June 28th, 2023.
