Monday's forecast: Severe storms possible in the afternoon and evening, then turning hotter for the rest of the week
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Monday, June 26th, 2023, as well as a look at the week ahead.
Spoiler alert, it gets hot.
Monday could be a busy weather day across the area.
As of this recording late Sunday evening, we’re watching a convective complex in Kentucky that is headed southeastward.
It may hold on enough to spread some showers into the area on Monday morning, and this could have some impacts on the weather later in the day, but the thinking right now is that Monday still features highs peaking in the low 90s with dew points in the 70s, and that’s going to yield heat indices around 100 in the afternoon.
From there, an eastern advancing prefrontal drought and disturbances aloft should help kick off showers and thunderstorms across the Carolinas up into the mid-Atlantic states, and the atmosphere should be unstable enough for a few severe thunderstorms here in the low country with damaging winds and hail being the primary threats.
It will be interesting to see how much the morning thunderstorm complex disrupts the environment if at all.
Possible we could see some showers, and it’s very likely it could rain itself out before it even gets here.
The bottom line here is that there could be some changes to the forecast tomorrow as these small details evolve, so keep an ear out for possible watches and warnings as we get into Monday evening.
The trough and the associated surface front get through Tuesday with a few scattered afternoon storms possible, then we get into a bit of a rain-free spell for a few days with fairly warm late June weather.
Expect highs to top out in the low 90s each afternoon, while dew points in the upper 60s should yield heat indices in the mid to upper 90s each day.
By Friday the low level moisture begins to kick back up, and that in turn will drive heat indices into the 105-110 degree range, solidly in heat advisory territory for June.
And while the criteria goes up to 110 degrees plus on July 1st, weather service forecasters may opt to keep the advisories going into the weekend as this has been a pretty mild June so far.
A top 20 coolest June on record to this point if you can believe it, but it has been.
Thanks rain! The bottom line is this.
This will be the first real solid round of Charleston heat and humidity that we all know and some of us claim to love, and you’re going to want to take heat safety precautions in the afternoons if you must be outside this weekend.
And finally, the tropics have returned to a state of relative quiet as Cindy has opened up into a tropical wave as of the 11pm advisory Sunday.
Hurricane Center has ended advisories on Cindy, and while there’s a tiny chance it might try to get back together north of Bermuda, that does not look likely.
There are now no active tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Basin, and right now the Hurricane Center doesn’t have their eye on any particular areas of interest for tropical development.
Savor it while it lasts! And that was Charleston Weather Daily for June 26th, 2023.
