Thursday's forecast: Slightly cooler than normal temperatures continue, and they'll hang around into the weekend
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Thursday, June 1st, 2023, the first day of climatological summer, and of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season.
Overall, expect Thursday to be a largely quiet day with a mix of sun and cloud cover as high pressure continues to wedge south into the area.
Temperatures will run a couple degrees below normal for June 1st, generally low to mid 60s to start followed by highs in the low 80s.
A stray shower or two can rarely be discounted in this pattern, but the vast majority of us get Thursday in rain free.
We’ll continue with slightly below normal temperatures as we head into the first weekend of June.
Generally, expect highs in the low to mid 80s, lows in the mid 60s, with a slight chance of an afternoon or evening thunderstorm.
If there’s a time where a thunderstorm may be a little more likely, it’s going to be Saturday evening as a backdoor cold front approaches the area from the north.
Thankfully, we are not looking at a repeat of the first part of last weekend.
And finally, a quick look at the tropics.
The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor a low pressure system in the Gulf that’s drifting towards Florida.
It has a short window for possibly developing a little more in the way of tropical characteristics, but the National Hurricane Center puts those odds at around 20%.
Regardless of development, it looks like this low will stay away from us as it gets steered into the Atlantic.
It serves as a great reminder that hurricane season is indeed starting up.
Indeed, by the time most of you hear this, it’s probably going to be June 1st.
As I’ve mentioned, the best time to plan is now.
I like Hurricane.sc from the South Carolina Emergency Management Division.
There you can get tips on what to pack, what to prepare, what kind of supplies you’ll need, what your evacuation zone is, and so much more.
It’s a great resource.
I highly recommend it.
One of those things that we hope we never have to use.
But it’s great that it’s there.
