Tuesday's forecast: Turning warmer before the rain moves in Wednesday
Hello everyone, Jared Smith here with your Charleston weather forecast for Tuesday, May 16th, 2023, with a peek ahead at the rest of the workweek as well.
Tuesday will run a few degrees warmer in the wake of a warm front passing through in the morning.
Look for highs to top out in the upper 80s under a mix of sun and clouds.
We should see fewer clouds in the wake of the sea breeze as the afternoon wears on.
There is the risk of a stray shower or storm in the afternoon, primarily inland, but we could see some of that if it does form.
It could traverse its way closer to the coast, so something to watch, but the vast majority of us should stay rain free.
Now that changes as we get into Wednesday as a cold front pushes back south into the area.
We’ll start the day on a warm note.
Lows will bottom out right around 70 degrees, very summer-like, and highs will top out in the mid to upper 80s before thunderstorms begin to fire as the front and the sea breeze start to do their thing, lifting parcels to their level of free convection.
Not too much instability for severe weather, but there is the potential for some heavy rain and a lot of moisture in place.
A little bit of flooding can’t totally be ruled out here, so that’ll be a storyline that we’ll watch for Wednesday.
That front will get by Thursday, and in the wake of that front, high pressure wedges in from the north and temperatures will run much cooler.
So we’ll be in the upper 80s on Wednesday, and on Thursday we’ll be barely cracking the mid-70s in the afternoon.
So a very different air mass there.
Winds will be coming in from the northeast, and there’s going to be a little bit of moisture running over the top of this wedge, and that will allow for some showers to stick around Thursday but not expecting a total washout.
Again, that northeast wind is going to be breezy.
We could see gusts 20-25 miles an hour at times, so we’ll keep an eye on that.
Now that wedge is going to break down a little bit on Friday, and it’s going to continue to weaken throughout the day.
Temperatures will start to respond, getting back into the low 80s.
Still a couple showers hanging around, but we should have a little less cloud cover on Friday, and it should be a reasonably okay day.
And as we get into the weekend, we might see another front move into the area at some point maybe Sunday after a somewhat summer-like Saturday with just some afternoon thunderstorms.
